There has been very few racing game series that have been able to last throughout the various generations of video game consoles. Driver is one of those few series that has been able to last throughout the last four console generation cycles. The first driver game was released back in 1999 for the Playstation 1, PC and Game Boy Color. The game had you take over a former race car driver by the name of John Tanner. The goal of this game was to drive across the United States of America. You drove through Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York City. You were able to explore each city with your car through the open world software.
Open world video games had never been seen before Driver. This type of video game spawned off video game series more popular than Driver. These video game series include Grand Theft Auto, Saints Row, Need for Speed, Watch Dogs, Sleeping Dogs and many more. Over the course of the last 15 years there has been seven games created for the Driver series, almost every single one of the games being ported over to a hand held system.
The second driver game was released on November 13th, 2000. The game was first released on the Playstation and then was later transferred over to the Game boy Color. This time you were met with an older John Tanner who had now become a detective, he is training his new partner Tobias Jones when they once again have to race around the world in order to arrest various criminals. This time Driver took you to Chicago, Las Vegas, Havana and Rio De Janeiro. After Driver 2 was released the game became increasingly popular and one of the main racing series for the Playstation.
Eventually Microsoft created their own console called the Xbox. Driver then became available across multiple platforms when Driver 3 was released back in 2004. The game became available on the Playstation 2, Game Boy Advanced, PC and Xbox. Over time there were four more driver games released for various consoles include the Wii and Nintendo 3ds.
